While on a retreat in the vast Canadian wilderness, Lara Humbert gained new perspectives on her writing process and composed the initial repertoire for her first large ensemble, the octet « I’m Not Done Cooking ». These eight musicians, meticulously chosen for their virtuosity, their musical personality, and their sense of togetherness, thus form the pianist’s second project as a leader, following her quartet. Two years after their first concert, the group recorded their debut album. « Tome 1: Beauty and the Queen » will be released on 20th March on the Belgian label Mokuhi Sonorities.
Tome 1 : Beauty And The Queen
(20/03/26)
‘Tome 1: Beauty and The Queen’ serves as a breathtaking introduction to the multidimensional world of ‘I’m Not Done Cooking’. Their sound defies easy categorization, weaving together elements of pop, classical music, and experimental jazz. There are no limits, only continuous delightful surprises, constantly sparking the listener’s curiosity. Their live performance is a cinematic, hypnotic experience that transports the audience into the deepest reaches of their own imagination. From joy and excitement to sadness and melancholy, the music touches every emotional chord, unveiling an entire universe of sound.
The band’s magic requires very little to bloom: just a few mics, a room, and a piano. This debut album was captured in a whirlwind day and a half in a Brussels rehearsal space. For the final two tracks, ‘La Fusée’ and ‘Jouvenet’, the session moved to Lara Humbert’s small apartment, where sound engineer Tom Bourgeois ran cables down the stairwell to record from his basement studio. This raw, DIY approach is fueled by the collective energy and friendship that defines the group. This spirit was on full display at their standout performance at ‘UN PEU’ — a tiny, wonderful art space in Brussels. The group brings together virtuoso musicians who are significant contributors to the city’s creative music scene. It is this fusion of distinct artistic voices, anchored by Lara Humbert’s eclectic compositions, that gives the project its unique character and explains the growing excitement surrounding them.
La Fusée
(27/02/26)
‘La Fusée’ is a track largely inspired by the soundscapes of artists like Knower, Meshell Ndegeocello, Saya Gray, and Bill Frisell. The composition grew out of the artist’s desire to experiment with the boundaries of pop and groove, adding a spark of excitement to the album’s narrative — like a rocket taking off, swift and luminous.
Jouvenet
(30/01/26)
Lara Humbert wrote ‘Jouvenet’ following the sudden passing of her uncle. In the winter that followed, she experienced a period of depression where daily life felt clouded by the morbid. This warm melody came to her as she reached for the memory of their shared happiness — a simple theme composed to keep the memory alive.
